Author Guidelines

Qaulan: Jurnal Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by STAIN Mandailing Natal, Indonesia. The journal is committed to publishing high-quality scholarly works in Islamic communication, broadcasting, da'wah communication, Islamic media, digital communication, and related interdisciplinary fields.

Authors are invited to submit original manuscripts that contribute theoretically, methodologically, or empirically to the development of Islamic communication and broadcasting studies.

1. TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS

Qaulan accepts the following types of manuscripts:

1.1. Research Articles

Original research based on qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, library research, field research, or other appropriate scholarly methodologies.

1.2. Conceptual Articles

Scholarly articles that develop theoretical perspectives, conceptual frameworks, critical arguments, or new approaches to Islamic communication and related fields.

1.3. Review Articles

Critical reviews of significant developments in a particular research area, including systematic literature reviews and integrative reviews.

Manuscripts must demonstrate clear academic contribution and relevance to the journal's focus and scope.

2. FOCUS AND SCOPE

Qaulan welcomes manuscripts addressing, but not limited to:

Manuscripts outside the journal's scope may be rejected during the initial editorial screening.

3. ORIGINALITY AND NOVELTY

Submitted manuscripts must be original works and must not have been previously published or simultaneously submitted to another journal.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that:

  • The manuscript has not been published elsewhere.

  • The manuscript is not under consideration by another journal.

  • All sources and previous studies are properly acknowledged.

  • The research provides a clear scholarly contribution.

  • Any use of previously published material is properly cited.

  • The manuscript does not contain plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, or other forms of academic misconduct.

The editorial team may use plagiarism-detection software as part of the editorial screening process.

4. LANGUAGE

Manuscripts may be written in English or Indonesian, according to the journal's current publication policy.

Authors are expected to use clear, academic, and grammatically appropriate language.

For English manuscripts, authors should ensure:

  • Correct grammar and syntax

  • Consistent academic terminology

  • Clear paragraph structure

  • Appropriate scholarly style

  • Consistent use of British or American English

Authors are encouraged to have manuscripts professionally proofread before submission when necessary.

5. MANUSCRIPT STRUCTURE

Research articles should generally follow the structure below:

Title

The title should be concise, informative, specific, and reflect the main subject of the research.

Avoid unnecessary abbreviations and overly broad titles.

Author Information

The manuscript should include:

  • Full name of each author

  • Institutional affiliation

  • Department or study program

  • Institution

  • City and country

  • ORCID ID

  • Corresponding author's email address

Abstract

The abstract should provide a concise overview of the manuscript, including:

  1. Background or research problem

  2. Research objective

  3. Methodology

  4. Main findings

  5. Conclusion or scholarly contribution

The abstract should generally contain approximately 150–250 words.

Keywords

Provide 3–5 keywords that represent the main concepts of the manuscript.

Keywords should be separated by semicolons.

Example:

Keywords: Islamic communication; digital da'wah; social media; Islamic broadcasting; digital media

6. MAIN ARTICLE

Research articles should generally contain the following sections:

Introduction

The introduction should explain:

  • Research background

  • Research problem

  • Relevant scholarly context

  • Research gap

  • Research objectives

  • Theoretical or practical significance of the study

The introduction should clearly demonstrate why the research is necessary and what contribution it makes to existing scholarship.

Literature Review / Theoretical Framework

This section should discuss relevant theories, concepts, and previous research.

Authors should prioritize:

  • Recent scholarly literature

  • Peer-reviewed journal articles

  • Relevant books

  • High-quality academic sources

  • Primary research sources

Authors should clearly demonstrate how the present study relates to previous scholarship.

Method

The methodology should be described clearly enough to allow readers to understand how the research was conducted.

Depending on the research design, this section may include:

  • Research approach

  • Research design

  • Research location

  • Population and sample

  • Participants or informants

  • Data sources

  • Data collection techniques

  • Research instruments

  • Data analysis techniques

  • Validity or reliability procedures

  • Ethical considerations

Results

Present the findings objectively and systematically.

Tables, figures, charts, and other visual materials may be used when necessary.

Results should directly address the research questions or objectives.

Discussion

The discussion should interpret the findings rather than merely repeat them.

Authors should:

  • Relate findings to previous studies

  • Connect findings with relevant theories

  • Explain similarities and differences

  • Discuss theoretical implications

  • Discuss practical implications where appropriate

  • Identify the scholarly contribution of the research

Conclusion

The conclusion should provide a concise answer to the research problem and summarize the main contribution of the study.

Avoid simply repeating the abstract or results.

Recommendations may be included when they are directly supported by the findings.

7. TABLES AND FIGURES

Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively according to their order of appearance.

Tables and figures must:

  • Have clear titles

  • Be referred to in the manuscript

  • Be relevant to the discussion

  • Use readable formatting

  • Include sources when applicable

Authors must ensure that they have permission to reproduce copyrighted visual materials.

8. CITATION AND REFERENCES

Qaulan encourages authors to use a consistent academic citation style.

The journal recommends the use of APA Style, 7th Edition, unless otherwise specified by the editorial board.

Authors are strongly encouraged to use reference-management software such as:

  • Mendeley

  • Zotero

  • EndNote

References should primarily consist of relevant and recent scholarly publications.

Authors should ensure that:

  • Every citation in the text appears in the reference list.

  • Every reference in the reference list is cited in the manuscript.

  • Author names and publication years are accurate.

  • DOI information is provided when available.

  • URLs are included when necessary and appropriate.

Authors are encouraged to prioritize peer-reviewed journal articles and reputable academic sources.

9. DOI AND DIGITAL IDENTIFIERS

Where available, authors should provide DOI information for cited publications.

Authors are also encouraged to provide their own:

  • ORCID iD

  • Google Scholar Profile

  • Scopus Author ID, if available

  • Other relevant academic identifiers

These identifiers help improve author visibility, attribution, and research discoverability.

10. MANUSCRIPT FORMATTING

Authors should follow the journal's official manuscript template.

As a general guideline:

  • Manuscript file: Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx)

  • Page size: A4

  • Font: Times New Roman

  • Font size: 12 pt

  • Line spacing: 1.15 or according to the journal template

  • Text alignment: Justified

  • Margins: According to the official journal template

  • Page numbers: Required

  • Tables and figures: Embedded in the manuscript and appropriately numbered

The editorial office may return manuscripts that do not follow the required formatting.

11. MANUSCRIPT LENGTH

A research article should generally contain approximately 4,000–7,000 words, including references, tables, and figures.

The editorial board may consider manuscripts outside this range when the length is justified by the scholarly content.

Authors should prioritize substantive academic contribution over unnecessary length.

12. PEER REVIEW PROCESS

Qaulan applies a Double-Blind Peer Review system.

The review process generally consists of:

Submission → Initial Screening → Editorial Assessment → Double-Blind Peer Review → Revision → Final Decision → Copyediting → Publication

During the review process:

  • Authors do not know the identity of reviewers.

  • Reviewers do not know the identity of authors.

  • Manuscripts are evaluated based on academic quality, originality, relevance, methodology, clarity, and contribution.

Possible editorial decisions include:

  • Accept

  • Accept with Minor Revisions

  • Major Revisions

  • Reject and Resubmit

  • Reject

13. AUTHOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Authors are responsible for:

  • Ensuring the originality of the manuscript

  • Providing accurate research information

  • Properly citing all sources

  • Obtaining necessary research permissions

  • Declaring potential conflicts of interest

  • Responding appropriately to reviewer comments

  • Providing corrections when errors are identified after publication

All authors listed on the manuscript should have made a substantial contribution to the research and manuscript.

14. AUTHORSHIP

Authorship should reflect substantial contributions to the research.

Individuals who contributed significantly to the research design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, or manuscript preparation should be appropriately acknowledged as authors.

Individuals who provided limited assistance may be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section rather than listed as authors.

All authors should approve the final version of the manuscript before submission.

15. RESEARCH ETHICS

Authors conducting research involving human participants should comply with applicable ethical standards.

Where appropriate, manuscripts should provide information regarding:

  • Informed consent

  • Participant confidentiality

  • Data protection

  • Research ethics approval

  • Ethical considerations

Authors must not disclose personally identifiable information without appropriate permission.

16. PLAGIARISM AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Qaulan has a strong commitment to academic integrity.

The journal does not tolerate:

  • Plagiarism

  • Self-plagiarism

  • Duplicate publication

  • Fabrication of data

  • Falsification of data

  • Manipulation of research findings

  • Undisclosed conflicts of interest

  • Improper authorship

  • Citation manipulation

Submitted manuscripts may be screened using plagiarism-detection software.

Manuscripts that violate academic integrity standards may be rejected or retracted.

17. CONFLICT OF INTEREST

Authors must disclose any financial, professional, personal, or institutional relationships that could potentially influence the research or its interpretation.

If no conflict exists, authors may state:

18. FUNDING

Authors should disclose all sources of financial support for the research.

Example:

If the research received no external funding:

19. DATA AVAILABILITY

Authors are encouraged to provide appropriate information regarding the availability of research data.

Where possible, datasets, instruments, coding materials, or other supporting materials may be deposited in an appropriate research repository.

If data cannot be publicly shared because of ethical, privacy, or legal restrictions, authors should explain the reason.

20. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Authors may acknowledge individuals, institutions, research assistants, funding agencies, or other parties that contributed to the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship.

21. SUBMISSION PROCESS

Manuscripts should be submitted through the journal's official online submission system.

Before submission, authors should ensure that:

22. OPEN ACCESS

Qaulan: Jurnal Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam is committed to providing Open Access to its published scholarly content.

Published articles are freely accessible to readers to support the dissemination, discussion, and advancement of knowledge in Islamic communication and broadcasting studies.

23. PUBLICATION FREQUENCY

Qaulan is published twice a year:

  • June

  • December

The journal operates a continuous editorial and peer-review process throughout the year according to the journal's submission schedule.

24. COPYRIGHT AND LICENSE

Authors should review the journal's current copyright and licensing policy before submission.

Where applicable, the licensing information should clearly specify how published articles may be accessed, shared, reused, and distributed.

25. ARTICLE PROCESSING CHARGES

The journal's policy regarding Article Processing Charges (APC) should be clearly stated on the journal website.

If the journal does not charge authors, the following statement may be used:

Article Processing Charge: Qaulan does not charge authors any article processing fee for the submission, peer-review, or publication of manuscripts.

If an APC applies, the amount and payment conditions should be clearly stated.
